About Us

A moment that shaped our thinking
In 2005, Neil read Let My People Go Surfing by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia. The book prompted him to reflect on the impact businesses have on the world around them.
On returning, he shared his reflections with the team. Together, we began reviewing the footprint our practice was creating from lightbulbs to loo roll! That moment continues to guide how Crossbank Dental Care operates today.
Excellence isn’t just about clinical skill, it’s about taking responsibility for every decision, every process and every standard we set.
Sustainable dentistry in action
We have integrated sustainability into every aspect of our practice. Each initiative is designed to protect the planet while supporting modern, efficient dentistry.
Key actions include:
-
Installing solar panels & an electric car-charging point
-
Reducing clinical waste through advanced intra-oral digital scanning
-
Switching to recycled toilet paper
-
Recycling cardboard, paper, and plastics
-
Printing stationery on FSC-certified recycled stock with chlorine-free inks
-
Designing referral packs to be fully recyclable
-
Using biodegradable carrier bags
-
Partnering with Green Impact to promote sustainable dentistry
We continually review how we can do better for our patients, team and the environment and enjoy celebrating our successful winning of awards in sustainability in recognition of our efforts.

Dentistry from a
team who truly care
Dedicated to creating and protecting beautiful smiles
“Care” is part of our name and is embedded in our culture. Our care for our patients is at the centre of our practice, embraces our team and also extends to the wider world.
Our practice is dedicated to creating and protecting beautiful smiles; we know how to improve your quality of life through an increased confidence in your smile or your ability to chew comfortably.
Implant a Tree: Growing smiles and forests

In 2024, we launched “Implant a Tree” in partnership with Cumbria Wildlife Trust. For every dental implant we place, we have pledged to plant a tree in Cumbria.
Trees are essential for biodiversity and fighting climate change. By linking advanced dental care with environmental action, our patients help us make a tangible difference: one smile and one tree at a time. Together we’re nurturing a greener, healthier Cumbria for future generations.

Inspiring healthy habits for life
We are passionate about early dental education. Our much-loved ‘Tooth Fairy’ visits local schools to teach children the importance of looking after their teeth from an early age.
These visits support healthy habits, confidence and wellbeing that can last a lifetime.

Making a difference beyond our borders
We believe care should extend globally. For many years, we have supported Bridge2Aid and are now aGold Unity Partner.
Our fundraising helps train health workers in emergency dental care in developing nations; creating long-term, sustainable change rather than short-term fixes.
In 2025, we were proud to sponsor a Dental Therapist, supporting education and empowerment that mirrors our own belief in building lasting foundations for better health.
Supporting our local community
Meaningful care starts close to home. We support local businesses wherever possible:
Commissioning marketing materials
Sourcing gifts for our team
Working with local artisan suppliers
We also proudly support the Brewery Arts Centre, helping to sustain the cultural life of our community. Investing locally strengthens the networks that make Kendal a great place to live and work.
A culture shaped by care
Culture isn’t something we talk about, it’s something we live every day. It guides our decisions, supports our team and reassures our patients that they’re choosing a practice grounded in care, responsibility and long-term thinking.
By setting high standards and inviting our patients and community to be part of the journey, we aim to create and protect beautiful smiles while caring for the world they belong to.

Neil Cooper has an extensive knowledge and ability in restorative dentistry. He has a special interest in the functional and aesthetic restoration of dental implants with particular attention to the reconstruction of failing dentitions and edentulous mouths. He has a passion for making patients' smiles naturally beautiful by achieving harmony between the teeth, gums, lips and face.
Neil believes that life long learning is an essential part of modern dentistry and his search for knowledge has led him to study with dental world leaders in the U.K, Europe and the U.S.A. He is an active full member of the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry.
Replacing missing teeth with dental implants is of particular interest to Neil and he is one of the few British dentists able to offer patients the unrivalled Gerber-Condylator system of dentures. Neil’s understanding manner enables patients to confidently share their dental concerns. He will then transform their smiles with skilled dentistry and painstaking care. Over 70 dentists from the surrounding area refer patients to Neil for his implant skills.
Neil has lectured widely in both the U.K and Europe on the subject of implant dentistry, focusing mainly on the stabilisation or elimination of dentures; providing full sets of fixed teeth for patients.
He is a visiting implant surgeon and prosthodontist with The Face Team on Harley Street, London, where he is involved in the development and delivery of a successful year-long implant teaching programme for dentists. In addition, he has taught at The Royal College of Surgeons, London.

When did you join the Crossbank Dental Care team?
April 2023.
How long have you been a dental nurse?
I have been a dental nurse for 27 years. I started in 1997 when I left high school.
How has your career developed since working at Crossbank Dental Care?
In the short time I have worked here at Crossbank Dental Care I have completed training for extended dental nurse duties in intra oral scanning and suture removal. I have also completed several courses to further my development and knowledge, these include, certificate in sedation mentoring allowing me to nurse for sedation cases, certificate in infection prevention and control lead (IPC) and most recently my radiography qualification. I have recently completed plaque indices and fluoride varnish application whilst also working towards gaining the certificate in oral health. These will allow me to run oral health prevention clinics in practice as well as going to schools and other organisations to teach about the importance of oral health.
What do you enjoy most about being a dental nurse?
The people I work with makes Crossbank Dental Care a great place to work.
I also like that everyday is different and you never know what to expect. The best part is being able to help patients achieve the outcome they have wished for, and see the smile on their face knowing that you played a part in that happiness.
If you had to swap jobs for a day who would you swap with and why ?
This is a difficult question for me as I love the job role I currently have. I am lucky that I am able to work in most aspects of dentistry, ranging from general dental care to oral surgery, and implant surgery.

What made you decide to do a dental nurse apprenticeship?
I wanted to work and didn’t feel university was for me at the time. I wanted to do something practical and I had been interested in dentistry for a while after studying health & social care and science at sixth form. I really enjoy caring for people and I have a calming manner which would be well suited in a dental practice.
When did you join Crossbank Dental Care and how did you find the practice?
A friend of a friend worked at the practice and suggested I write in to see if there was any vacancies. I had been writing to several practices in the area and started working here in 2019!
What was the most challenging and enjoyable parts of your training?
My training was in covid which proved extremely difficult to complete at times! This involved a complete change in our SOP’s (standard operating procedures). The additional PPE required during covid was extremely uncomfortable to wear, especially the respirator masks! I would say one of the best parts of the training was the support I received from my colleagues and the encouragement to be hands on in surgery!
How long did it take to complete your training?
Altogether, it probably took around 2 years or possibly longer. During the lockdown we temporarily couldn’t physically work and there were no online classes at the time which delayed the process. On top of that, my training provider accidentally booked me on the wrong exam, I only realised this during the exam in Carlisle! That slowed the process down and I ended up sitting the correct exam in Blackburn because they only held the exams in Carlisle once a month!
How has completing additional training helped you to develop your career?
Following my nursing qualification I later completed training in radiography and intra oral scanning. I am currently working on treatment coordination training. I enjoy the added responsibility that comes with the additional training and this gives me a larger role in the patient journey, often the nurse scans the patient's mouth as part of their treatment and work with the dentist to provide the patient with their optimal treatment plan. I am also trained in ILS (immediate life support), in the safeguarding team and a trained fire Marshall!
What are you planning to do in your professional future?
I am currently studying to work as a treatment coordinator. I would love to work directly with patients as a familiar face and a point of contact at the practice.
How do you see the role of the dental nurse changing in the future?
I think there will be a larger scope of practice in the future for dental nurses. This is really exciting for my future in dentistry!!
What do you find interesting about your job?
For me I enjoy working with the clinicians who provide cosmetic dentistry, I love a good before and after! Sometimes a patients smile can be transformed in a day, seeing a beautiful end result is very rewarding for me!
What would you advise others who consider becoming a dental nurse?
I would say that it is very outfacing at first, it is a whole new language with lots of terms to learn. Persevere with it as it will all click in the end! There will be a lot of procedures you likely won’t have seen before and it can be daunting at first, but in time its something you will get used to and becomes second nature!
If you had to swap jobs for one day in the practice, which job would you swap to and why?
I’d probably swap with a cosmetic dentist for the same reasons mentioned earlier - its so satisfying to see the end result!

What made you decide to do a Dental Nurse apprenticeship?
I wanted to be in a career that allows me to constantly learn and be able to help patients to gain confidence.
When did you join the Crossbank Dental Care team?
I have worked at Crossbank Dental Care since January 2024.
What has been the most challenging and enjoyable parts of your training?
The most challenging part of training is learning all dental terminology and that instruments can have more than one clinical name. The most enjoyable is constantly learning new things.
What are you planning to do in your professional future?
I plan to stay in dentistry and hopefully look at Implant Nursing/Treatment Coordination or possibly at a Hygiene/Therapy course.
What do you find most interesting about your job?
The anatomy of the human body and meeting new people.
If you had to swap jobs for one day in the practice, which job would you swap and why?
I would swap with an Implant Nurse because I find the surgical side of nursing interesting.

BAHons PgDipLaw LLM
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I find great joy in spreading positivity throughout our practice. The variety in my role keeps me engaged, and I particularly enjoy strategic planning and implementing steps to achieve multi-faceted goals - see more below!
What aspects of your role do you find the most fulfilling?
One of the most rewarding parts of my role is helping our team members fulfil their potential and develop unique positions for them tailored to their strengths. It's incredibly satisfying to see folks grow and thrive. I also find great satisfaction in seeing how our work positively impacts our patients' lives and overall health.
Can you describe a typical day at work for you?
While each day varies, I generally structure my time to focus "on" the business in the mornings. This includes strategic planning and business development through marketing and networking. In the afternoons, I shift to working "in" the business, catching up with team members and addressing day-to-day operations. This structure allows me to balance big-picture thinking with hands-on leadership, ensuring I stay connected to all aspects of our practice.
What future visions do you have for Crossbank Dental Care?
My vision for Crossbank Dental Care is multi-faceted:
-For our team: To create an environment where everyone feels nurtured and fulfilled in their roles.
-For our patients: To consistently deliver exceptional customer care and maintain high clinical standards through a highly skilled team.
-For our practice: To further develop our reputation as a multi-disciplinary referral practice.
-For our impact: To achieve B Corp certification, demonstrating our commitment to environmental and social responsibility. Ultimately, my vision is for Crossbank Dental Care to be recognised as a leader in innovative, patient-centred care that also prioritises staff wellbeing and environmental responsibility.
In all aspects of my role, from daily operations to long-term planning, my goal is to create an environment where our team can excel, our patients can receive the best possible care, and our practice can continue to grow and innovate in the field of dentistry. For me, Neil & I are not "just" running a dental practice – we're building a community of care that extends beyond our walls.
If you had to swap jobs for one day in the practice, which job would you swap and why?
I would choose to be a Treatment Coordinator for a day. I love meeting new people, learning about their needs and expectations, and introducing them to the "wow" factor of Crossbank Dental Care. It's an opportunity to make a great first impression and set the tone for a patient's entire experience with us. This role is crucial in setting patient expectations and ensuring they feel valued from the very beginning of their journey with us.

When did you join the Crossbank Dental Care team?
I joined the team in January 2021.
How has your career developed during your time at Crossbank Dental Care and what initially drew you to this profession?
I started working at Crossbank as maternity cover for part of the Front of House Team. As I have always loved mathematics, in my spare time I started an accountancy course.
When I mentioned the course in passing to Bex, I was delighted that she offered me a job working with the practice accounts, permanently. I thoroughly enjoy my role and what I have learnt about finances of a business has been fascinating! Since working at the practice I have gained a Foundation certificate in accounting, an advanced Diploma in accounting, professional membership with the Association of Accounting Technicians and I am hoping to gain a Diploma in Professional Accounting.
Can you describe your typical day-to-day responsibilities in your role as a bookkeeper?
Every day has different tasks including such things as price comparisons, invoicing, ordering, bank reconciliation, KPI analysis, budgeting, monitoring diary utilisation, payroll, assisting with data analysis on operating costs, productivity, pricing structure, membership plans, 7 surgery utilisation. I also sometimes have correspondence with patients if they have any financial queries.
What are you planning to do in your professional future?
I would love to gain a professional Diploma in Accounting and get a licence to work as an accounting technician. I have also been researching becoming a CIPP (chartered institute of payroll professionals) accountant and/or a ATT technician (Association of taxation technicians). Whatever happens, I would love to work in accounts because I love it!
If you had to swap jobs for one day in the practice, which job would you swap and why?
I would love to see what the implant nurses do, it would be fascinating to watch a live surgery!

Working here has helped me progress in my communication skills. Also, I have developed in the wider team, e.g. helping out with the rota and social media. This is helping me gain experience in the business area which is useful for my University course. I am currently studying Economics and Corporate Governance in Italian at the International University Uninettuno. I am trying my best to complete this degree so I can then start a private course, possibly accounting or finance. What I like about my course is that I can study online, and still be able to work full time. Also, they have a branch in London where I can take my exams.
