White filling or silver filling?

White fillings, also known as composite fillings, offer several benefits compared to traditional silver amalgam fillings:

Aesthetics: White fillings are tooth-coloured, so they blend in naturally with the rest of the tooth, making them virtually invisible. This is particularly advantageous for fillings in visible areas of the mouth as they provide a more natural appearance.

Preservation of tooth structure: White fillings require less removal of healthy tooth structure compared to silver fillings, meaning that more of the natural tooth can be preserved, contributing to its overall strength & longevity.

Versatility: White fillings can be used to repair both front & back teeth, providing a versatile option for dental restoration.

Bonding: White fillings bond directly to the tooth surface, which helps to strengthen the tooth & prevent further decay. This bonding capability also allows for more conservative preparations as less drilling is usually required.

Reduced sensitivity to temperature: Unlike silver fillings, which can expand & contract with temperature changes, composite fillings do not conduct temperature as much. This can reduce the likelihood of experiencing sensitivity to hot or cold foods & beverages.

Minimal risk of allergic reaction: While silver fillings contain metals such as mercury, silver, tin, & copper, composite fillings are made of a resin material that is less likely to cause allergic reactions in patients.

Environmental friendliness: White fillings do not contain mercury, making them a more environmentally friendly option, especially in terms of disposal.

Overall, white fillings offer a safe, durable & aesthetically pleasing option for dental restoration. However, the suitability of white fillings depends on various factors, including the size & location of the cavity, as well as your oral health & personal preferences.
